Encounters with Language: a round table discussion

Venue: Arts Theatre, Samuel Alexander Building, University of

    Manchester, Oxford Road, M13 9PL

    Time: 1.30-3.30

Language and communication play a crucial role in each stage of a refugee’s journey, and yet there are few opportunities to discuss how institutions and third sector organisations manage language needs in moments of crisis and in periods of transition to life in a new country. This round table brings together representatives from a range of organisations in the city of Manchester to discuss:

    - the role played by Refugee Community Organisations in supporting communication needs

    - the challenges faced by local providers of translation and interpreting in Manchester

    - charity sector approaches to the management of linguistic and cultural diversity

    - support for new arrivals with English language learning

Panellists include representatives from Revive, Manchester Women’s Aid, Manchester City Council (Talk English and M4 Translations), Migrants Supporting Migrants and the Chinese Health Information Centre.

    Who is this event for?

Refugee community organisations, interpreters and translators, service providers and service users in the statutory and third sector. The event is free to attend but registration is essential.
