NWTN introduces: French Connections

21 September, 2019 @ 10:00 am 5:00 pm

When asked what comes to mind when they think of Manchester, most people would mention football, music, cotton, the Suffragettes, Lowry… but not many would be aware of the city’s French connections.

So, as the first part of a full-day event, the NWTN is organising a French-themed guided tour on the morning of Saturday 21 September.

Led by a qualified Manchester tourist guide, the ‘Bonjour Manchester’ tour will take us past Mancunian buildings and sites which have associations with the French-speaking world and will provide a wealth of information about French people who have left their mark on the city.

It is open to members plus partners and children and will start at 10 a.m. at the Science and Industry Museum and end in St. Peter’s Square at approximately 12 p.m.

At the end of the tour, there will be time to sample some of Manchester’s culinary offerings in anticipation of the afternoon Gastronomy workshop which will take place at the Alliance Française on Portland Street.

The workshop will be led by Laurence Bisot, with assistance from Janice Crossfield, and is designed to enable participants either to discover an area in which they don’t currently work or to extend their skills by sharing experiences and picking up new ideas about how to tackle such texts.

It will be a “hands-on” session involving the collaborative translation of a range of texts on the theme of local gastronomy, food and drink and should prove both enlightening and entertaining.

The workshop will begin at 1.30 p.m. and end at 5 p.m.

Fee (including both the guided tour and workshop): ITI/NWTN members – £15, others – £20 (the guest fee for the tour only is £5).

Finally, anyone who will be in Manchester on the previous evening (Friday 20 September), is invited to join us for a ‘dîner français’ at Côte Brasserie on St. Mary’s Street at 7.30 p.m., for a chance to network, practise their French and enjoy some fine French cuisine! Please note that this involves an additional cost.
