SUMMARY:Spring Walk 2025
DESCRIPTION:This walk takes us to the northern boundaries of Greater Manchester and up into the hills above Ramsbottom. We’ll visit the Peel Tower – a local landmark on Holcombe Hill\, 1100 feet above sea level\, where we’ll stop to admire a view right across the county (sadly you can only climb to the top on certain Sundays). The walk is about 6 miles long\, and in places quite steep\, strenuous and even precipitous\, so it’s not just an easy stroll. Sturdy footwear is recommended\, as the paths are sometimes stony and narrow\, and tree roots and mud are likely to make it slippery in places if it’s been raining recently. \n\n\n\nIt’s an opportunity to explore some of the places in Lancashire where the Industrial Revolution began 250 years ago. On the way back\, we’ll pass through the Holcombe village conservation area and quench our thirst at The Shoulder of Mutton pub\, which was built in 1751 and survived being bombed by Zeppelins in World War I. \n\n\n\nPeel Tower\n\n\n\nOrganisers Mike Hanson and Andrew Wilson \n\n\n\nStart 12.00 pm from Nuttall Park car park in Ramsbottom (BL0 0AS)\, which is accessed via Nuttall Hall Road. It has plenty of free parking\, a small café and toilets. Alternatively\, you can meet us 15 minutes later outside Ramsbottom railway station (part of a heritage railway not linked to the national network)\, which has limited free parking but is easier to find and access if you arrive on public transport (tram to Bury\, then a 20 min bus ride to Ramsbottom). The station too has a café and toilets. \n\n\n\nIf you arrive late at the car park and need to catch us up\, walk past the tennis courts and the bandstand\, under the railway and through the Cormar Carpets factory yard\, then turn right towards Aldi and Ramsbottom station. \n\n\n\nFood and drink Bring a packed lunch and water to drink\, as well as a mat to sit on when eating/resting as we’ll stop for a picnic lunch at some point. \n\n\n\nFamily members\, friends and dogs are welcome\, but this walk may not be suitable for younger children. Active kids aged about 7 and upwards should manage the walk without too much difficulty provided they’re appropriately shod. If you’d like more information to help you decide whether to come\, please contact one of the organisers. \n\n\n\nIMPORTANT – PLEASE READ AND ONLY COME ON THE WALK IF YOU ACCEPT THE FOLLOWING DISCLAIMER: \n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome but participants must consider themselves to be on an unofficial day out with friends – neither the organisers nor NWTN or ITI can accept any liability for accidents or injuries sustained by anyone involved. \n\n\n\nBooking Please indicate your attendance by clicking on the RSVP button below.

SUMMARY:NWTN AGM 2025 (Online)
DESCRIPTION:The NWTN committee invites you to attend this year’s NWTN Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 30th April\, 4.00 pm – 6.00 pm. We will be holding the meeting entirely online (see joining link below).  \n\n\n\nThis year\, we are not combining the AGM with our Annual Dinner\, which will take place in Autumn. Look out for further announcements about the 40th anniversary of our network. \n\n\n\nThe provisional agenda is below. The 2024 AGM minutes and this year’s committee reports will be made available in due course in the Resources page on our website. If you have any ideas\, comments or questions\, please submit them to chair@nwtn.org.uk so we can add them to the agenda.  \n\n\n\nSome committee members have been fulfilling their roles for some years\, and we need new volunteers. If you wish to help the committee with their tasks and support the network\, please come forward. \n\n\n\nAlso\, if you have a specific idea for an event\, why not join the Events Team and help us to organise it! \n\n\n\nWe hope you can attend and we look forward to seeing you there.  \n\n\n\nThe committee are currently working out the exact way in which the online AGM will function\, given only full members will have the right to vote\, but we would stress that it is vital that all members feel able and willing to attend. As with other events\, this will be held via Zoom. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMeeting ID: 892 2438 0844 Passcode: 001220 \n\n\n\nWe recommend downloading Zoom onto your computer rather than using it with your web browser. All members will be sent further information about using Zoom\, the agenda and supporting documents closer to the time.

SUMMARY:Social Saturday: Diversification
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 15th March 2025 – 2-5pm \n\n\n\nYou’ve got the power: A diversification toolbox for freelance translators and interpreters with Ken Paver \n\n\n\nTranslators and interpreters are often told that their business needs to ‘diversify or die’\, and that there is a conventional range of fields into which they should be diversifying in order to boost their income. This presentation will look at what diversification is\, and what it isn’t. It’s not necessarily about technology (although it can be)\, or about doing new things\, like having to re-train to work in fields that lie outside your normal area of competence; it’s not about diversification versus specialisation; it’s not even necessarily about identifying and exploiting that killer business opportunity – although we would all love that\, of course. \n\n\n\nDiversification is about utilising the potential that’s already there in your business: you have potential opportunities for diversification lying undiscovered among your activities. Some will be close to the surface; others will be more deeply buried. Some will involve a greater degree of risk than others. \n\n\n\nThis kind of theoretical underpinning is all very well\, but what the sensible translator/interpreter needs is a set of concrete tools for improving their working practice and\, ultimately\, their lives: this presentation proposes a diversification toolbox\, designed to help language professionals to prepare for diversification\, and to identify key drivers of diversification opportunities in their individual business profiles (via a ‘diversification audit’)\, so that they can maximise their chances of seizing those opportunities when they emerge. \n\n\n\nTranslators and interpreters already have the power to diversify: it’s simply a question of harnessing that power by building on existing capabilities and contacts\, and shedding the inhibitions and misconceptions that can sometimes hold us back. \n\n\n\nAudience takeaway \n\n\n\nA clearer understanding of diversification\, and what it means for freelance translators and interpreters. A diversification toolbox\, containing a set of practical tools designed to help freelance translators and interpreters to prepare for and identify diversification opportunities\, giving them the best possible chance of seizing opportunities when they arise. A sense of translators and interpreters as business people with powerful\, valuable (and often untapped) skills and potential. \n\n\n\nTarget audience\n\n\n\nTranslators and interpreters of all levels of experience who want to understand the opportunities presented by diversification and would like a diversification toolbox to help them maximise their chances of success. Input and questions from professionals from a range of backgrounds and with a range of experiences will enrich the discussions around the presentation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker \n\n\n\nKen Paver has over 35 years’ experience as a translator\, interpreter\, trainer and technical writer\, specialising mainly in the nuclear and technology sectors. \n\n\n\nEvent details \n\n\n\nJoin us for this much-needed NWTN Social Saturday at the Friends’ Meeting House in central Manchester! Ken’s presentation will be followed by a tea/coffee break\, then a panel of colleagues (including Ken\, Dot Roberts\, Laurence Bisot and Roz Howarth) will talk about their experiences in diversification and answer questions from the audience. \n\n\n\nWe anticipate demand will be high\, so don’t delay in booking as tickets will be limited and the deadline is 4th March\, 4pm (for catering purposes)! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook your place

SUMMARY:Stronger Together 2024
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever asked yourself WHY you are a member of a local network like the NWTN? How about reminding yourself exactly why by joining us for a one-day face-to-face workshop in Manchester\, geared towards collaboration and support among colleagues? \n\n\n\nThis event is aimed at all members\, whether newbies to the profession or experienced translators and interpreters. Let’s explore the varied ways we can support each other and work together moving forward. Let’s help each other to progress our businesses and in doing so\, we’ll demonstrate that we’re “Stronger Together”! \n\n\n\nEven if you have attended last year\, you are welcome to this new session\, updated and enhanced thanks to the feedback received after Stronger Together 2023. \n\n\n\nWe will start the day by asking last year’s attendees what they have been able to put in place since last year. \n\n\n\nWe will also extend the Post-it activity through the whole day to provide more time for everyone’s questions – and answers! We will discuss the four concepts of collaboration addressed last year with more focus on your specific questions and the answers will be collected for the benefit of all. \n\n\n\nWe will break off into facilitated group discussions where we’ll share our experiences and express our needs: interpreters will have more chance to exchange ideas and support\, and we will discuss the various ways of coworking\, and how it can help you in your business\, your work and your well-being. \n\n\n\nThe outcome? By the end of the day\, you’ll have a better understanding of the concepts of collaboration and accountability\, and you’ll appreciate how you can make them work for yourself\, as well as for others. The event will be the perfect forum for networking with your peers on a local level and for putting all the concepts you’ve learned into practice. \n\n\n\nCheck out what we achieved at Stronger Together 2023 in Laurence Auffret’s excellent event report. \n\n\n\nReserve your ticket now so you don’t miss out! \n\n\n\nHow much? \n\n\n\nThis event will be heavily subsidised for our members as we’d like as many of you to attend as possible – lunch will be provided. You will be able to indicate any dietary requirements upon booking. All you’ll need to pay is the sign-up fee priced at £5 (Full NWTN members) or £25 (Associate NWTN members) + Eventbrite fees. \n\n\n\nVenue \n\n\n\nThe event will be held at the International Anthony Burgess Foundation\, Engine House\, Chorlton Mill\, 3 Cambridge Street\, M1 5BY (what3words/// punt.puff.status). \n\n\n\nThe venue is handy for Manchester Oxford Road rail station\, St. Peter’s Square tram stop\, or if you’re travelling by car\, there is Hulme Street car park across from the venue (Pay by phone location ID: 805420; what3words///swim.float.flank). \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook now

SUMMARY:SEO Translation Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Ever wondered what it takes to become an SEO translator? Maybe you’ve always wanted to offer SEO translation as part of your services but other than using a few keywords\, you’ve no idea where to even start? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, Teresa will go over some of the SEO basics\, so attendees understand exactly what it is and how it works. She’ll cover some examples of SEO-related linguistic tasks that are in high-demand in the translation industry and talk about how we can use free tools to deliver top quality results to our clients. The presentation will contain some practical examples and will be easy to follow\, both by those who have little or no SEO knowledge\, as well as those who already have some knowledge in this field but wish to specifically apply it to translation work. Participants who already have or are thinking about creating a website for their own translation businesses will be able to apply the best practices and concepts that we’ll develop in this webinar in their own digital marketing strategy. \n\n\n\nDon’t miss out on this chance to pick the brains of an industry leader in the field of SEO! Book your ticket NOW! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the speaker – Teresa Sousa \n\n\n\nTeresa has been working in the translation industry since 2005\, taking on different roles from project manager to freelance translator\, culminating in her founding her boutique translation business\, TAGS Language Solutions. Specialising in marketing translation\, transcreation and copywriting for the Lifestyle field\, she has always taken a profound interest in all things SEO\, applying the best practices to her own digital marketing strategy over the years with excellent results. As we’ve continued to witness a rise in the demand for SEO-related linguistic services\, she decided to help other translators garner the necessary tools and techniques to provide this new type of service. Since then\, she has trained hundreds of translators by doing live presentations and webinars on this subject\, providing training services to translation companies\, speaking at industry events and via her online course\, Become an SEO-savvy Translator\, launched in March 2021. \n\n\n\nEvent practicalities \n\n\n\nThis event will take the form of a full day online webinar/workshop\, starting at 10.00 am (BST) and finishing at approx. 4.30 pm\, with 2 x 1 hr 15 min sessions in the morning\, an hour’s lunch break\, and 2 x 1 hr 15 min sessions in the afternoon. There will be plenty of opportunities for questions\, a few practical exercises and screen breaks throughout. \n\n\n\nThe event will be limited to a maximum of 25 participants\, to enable attendees to benefit from personalised attention and to get the most out of the Q&A sessions. \n\n\n\nHow to book \n\n\n\nTickets cost £30 for the full day (same for all NWTN membership categories) complete with a recording that will be made available for a limited time afterwards (on the understanding that it will not be shared with non-attendees). Live attendance is preferable\, so you get the most out of the day. Only participants who attend live will be able to receive a certificate of attendance as proof of CPD. \n\n\n\nTicket sales are now LIVE! To avoid disappointment\, please book early!
