SUMMARY:NWTN Summer Walk at Arnside AONB\, Morecambe Bay
DESCRIPTION:Join the NWTN and YTI again for this year’s walk in the north of our region\, along the beautiful coastline of Morecambe Bay\, starting from the seaside village of Arnside. \n\n\n\nThe walk \n\n\n\nWe’ll be walking around the coast and back over Arnside Knott\, which has magnificent views over the Kent Estuary towards the Lakeland fells. Partners\, children and well-behaved dogs welcome. \n\n\n\nWe’ll start at 12 noon from the seafront seating area next to the public toilets (what3words ref: books.ferrying.projects) and walk a couple of miles along the coast to a picnic spot overlooking Morecambe Bay\, where we’ll eat our lunch. Anyone who wants an easier/flat walk can simply retrace their steps to the start and enjoy Arnside as they wait for us. The group will then carry on through the woods\, and after a brief ice cream stop\, we’ll take an energetic walk up Arnside Knott (159m/520 feet)\, enjoy the magnificent views and head back down into Arnside. \n\n\n\nThe overall distance is 9 km (5½ miles) with an extra km for those of us arriving by train. If you take the easy walk and walk back round the coast\, it will be about 6 km (3½ miles). You’ll need sturdy footwear as the footpaths across the limestone terrain are rocky and uneven in places\, and tree roots pose a trip hazard in the woodland sections. \n\n\n\nSee here for more information on the local area and facilities: https://www.arnsidesilverdaleaonb.org.uk/discover/plan-your-visit/travel-information/ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRefreshments before/after \n\n\n\nArnside’s small promenade offers a selection of cafes (we recommend Sandpipers) and shops. There are public toilets at the spot where we start the walk but beware – they cost 40p to use(!) and only accept cards. \n\n\n\nAfter the walk\, we’ll head to one of the village’s two seafront pubs – probably the Fighting Cocks\, which is handily located for Arnside’s famous fish and chip shop. This chippy gets very busy at peak times\, so they now prefer you to order online here: https://menus.preoday.com/arnside-chippy#/main/venue/menu \n\n\n\nor use their Arnside Chippy mobile app. \n\n\n\nAll of which means you can enjoy a drink in the pub while your fish and chips are freshly cooked for a designated time slot! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to get there \n\n\n\nCar: Arnside is about 70 miles from Manchester (leave M6 at J35). Parking is free but limited – there is a car park on the seafront next to the railway (postcode LA5 0HF\, what3words ref: mining.toasters.fortnight) and additional free parking at the end of the Promenade (beyond the small roundabout by The Albion pub). However\, street parking along the main section of the Promenade is limited to 3 hours\, which is not long enough for us. These 2 areas may be full by late morning on a summer Saturday – if so\, you’ll have to park on one of the residential streets away from the seafront. Alternatively\, you could park 20 miles away at Lancaster railway station (£4.50 to park all day\, postcode LA1 5NW\, what3words: chief.loss.decay) and join the organisers on the train. \n\n\n\nTrain: The organisers will be taking the 10.51 train from Lancaster (£6.20 for an off-peak return)\, arr. Arnside 11.10 but you can join this same train at Manchester Airport (dep. 9.29)\, Manchester Piccadilly (dep. 9.50)\, Bolton or Preston – cheap advance tickets for specific trains available here: https://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk \n\n\n\nThe trains back run approximately once an hour. \n\n\n\nOther information \n\n\n\nThis is a free “turn up and go” event (no charge) but please let Mike Hanson know you are coming (email him via mike@nwtn.org.uk or LinkedIn)\, so that we can look out for you. Alternatively\, you can contact him if you have any particular concerns or queries via his mobile number below. \n\n\n\nIMPORTANT – PLEASE READ AND ONLY COME ON THE WALK IF YOU ACCEPT THE FOLLOWING WARNING: \n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome but participants must consider themselves to be on a private excursion – neither the organisers nor the NWTN can accept any liability for accidents or injuries sustained by anyone involved. \n\n\n\nFinally\, please note: \n\n\n\nIF THERE IS A RAIL STRIKE ON SATURDAY 1 JULY\, THIS SOCIAL EVENT WILL STILL GO AHEAD ON THAT DAY BUT IT WILL BE MOVED TO A DIFFERENT LOCATION IN THE SAME REGION WITH BETTER PARKING \n\n\n\nThat’s because Arnside is likely to be overwhelmed by cars on a sunny summer Saturday that coincides with a rail strike\, resulting in chaos (traffic jams and parking problems). If the event does have to be moved\, details of the new location will be announced W/C 19 June\, by which time the required notice of a train strike on 1 July will have been given.

SUMMARY:Coworking in Warrington
DESCRIPTION:Join us for another Northern Affinity coworking session\, this June at The Outset in Warrington. They’ve been undergoing some new building works with some exciting changes to the coworking space…we’re hopeful that the new roof terrace might be open and the weather might even be kind to us! \n\n\n\nThe coworking space has a café with reasonably-priced breakfast and lunch goodies. The session itself costs a bargain £11.55 for the whole day\, and parking is available in the nearby Golden Square shopping centre (£5 for the day). Hope you can join us!

SUMMARY:RHS Garden Bridgewater\, Salford - Private Group Visit
DESCRIPTION:It’s about time we put a spring back in our step and took full advantage of what’s right on our doorstep\, by paying a visit to the stunning RHS Garden Bridgewater in Salford! \n\n\n\nAlmost two years to the day\, the garden first opened to the public. The 154-acre garden is the biggest hands-on horticultural project undertaken in Europe since planning permission was first granted in 2017. Located on the grounds of where Worsley New Hall once stood\, the garden already looks well established. From increasing biodiversity to managing water\, sustainability and caring for the landscape are key to what the RHS do at the garden. \n\n\n\nCome and join us for a private guided tour of the walled garden\, led by one of the garden’s knowledgeable volunteers. Learn about how the garden was created and what’s involved on a daily basis. \n\n\n\nWe will visit on Sunday 21st May 2023 and meet at the Welcome Building at midday. Our private group tour is booked for 2-3pm\, so you will be free to catch up with colleagues over a bite to eat in the café before the tour starts. \n\n\n\nPlease note dogs are not allowed in the garden\, with the exception of registered support dogs. If you wish to visit with your children\, please contact Kate Lo\, NWTN Events Team Lead. \n\n\n\nCost: Garden admission is free for RHS members (you must notify the NWTN in advance of your valid membership details); admission for non-RHS members costs £10.35. In addition to the admission fee\, all visitors must pay a supplement for the guided tour @ £5 per person. Please note there must be a minimum of 15 people for the group booking to go ahead. \n\n\n\nTransport: \n\n\n\nThere is a large free car park on site that includes three EV charging stations available with space to charge six vehicles. They are supplied by EV Charge Online. For Sat Nav users the postcode is M28 2LJ. \n\n\n\nA shuttle bus service runs from Manchester Piccadilly/Salford Crescent/Walkden train stations priced @ £4 return per person – arriving at the garden at 12.05pm and departing at 4.20pm. \n\n\n\nMore details about the shuttle bus service can be found here: https://www.rhs.org.uk/gardens/bridgewater/plan-your-visit/shuttle-bus-frequently-asked-questions \n\n\n\nDon’t delay and book your ticket today – bookings close on 21 April 2023 as the RHS require one months’ notice! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook your visit

SUMMARY:NWTN Annual Dinner 2023
DESCRIPTION:Spring is coming\, and it’s time to meet again for a convivial dinner with colleagues. \n\n\n\nThis year\, we’re taking you to Browns Brasserie in Manchester City Centre\, with a delicious three-course menu to tempt your tastebuds. The NWTN will pay for your first drink to lighten the atmosphere and get everyone chatting. \n\n\n\nYour partner is welcome to join us too! As a note to any newbie members\, or those who don’t know many others\, you need not feel shy – we’ll make sure you feel welcome as that’s the point of being part of a friendly local network! \n\n\n\nBrowns offers a wonderful three-course menu called the Classic at £29.50. The menu is available to read or download below. When you buy your ticket(s)\, you’ll need to pre-order your chosen dishes from the menu (visible on Eventbrite). The hardest part will be remembering what you pre-ordered on the day! \n\n\n\nThe NWTN will pay the group service charge\, so you’ll only have to pay for any extra drinks – we kindly ask you to order them and ‘pay as you go’ at the bar\, to save us any headaches of dealing with a large bill at the end! \n\n\n\nThe restaurant is situated at the top of King Street\, so it’s not far from the Alliance française (Portland Street) where we’ll hold our AGM on the same day\, from 4pm to 6pm. It’s not mandatory to come to the AGM first but we would welcome your attendance and input to help formulate the NWTN’s roadmap for the year ahead! More details regarding the AGM will be communicated separately via an email to all members. \n\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you at both events! \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions\, please contact Laurence at chair@nwtn.org.uk or Kate Lo at events@nwtn.org.uk. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook via Eventbrite\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrowns-DN-Classics-Menu.215-1Download

SUMMARY:Knitting & Crafts Social Saturday
DESCRIPTION:Over the last decade or so\, we have all at some point or another\, had occasion to question and assess the sustainability of the way we consume\, work and generally live our lives. In the drive towards sustainability\, we have been encouraged to recycle\, upcycle\, repair\, do-it-ourselves\, and generally make do and mend rather than buying new. As a result\, knitting\, sewing and other crafts have grown in popularity\, right across the globe. And if it’s global\, it’s multilingual – and that’s where we come in.  \n\n\n\nLike all our Social Saturday events\, this get-together will primarily aim to provide a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere for all crafters – both experts and novices – to meet up and swap needles and vocabulary tips over a cup of tea.  \n\n\n\n\nAre you an experienced crafter? Please bring your best work and showcase your skills for other members.\n\n\n\nA novice\, but keen to learn? This is a chance for you to pick up a few tricks and try your hand at something new. Some material will be provided but do bring along any project you need help with! \n\n\n\n\nKnitting is a very technical subject and can be challenging in translation\, with many obscure abbreviations and tricky measurements. Anne de Freyman\, who is currently translating the Vogue Knitting book from English to French\, will talk about the specific challenges which the project presents. A keen knitter herself\, she will be joined by other wool crafters and make-your-own enthusiasts.  \n\n\n\nWhether you are creative or not\, are keen to learn about crafts\, or just want to know more about the translation of knitting patterns and other related texts\, please join us for a convivial afternoon at the YHA in Manchester.  \n\n\n\nAs usual\, tickets to our Social Saturdays are £5 (+ Eventbrite fees)\, please book your place on Eventbrite \n\n\n\nDon’t forget that you can volunteer (either prior to or during the event) to write a review for it. Your write-up will be published on our blog\, and you will get a FREE TICKET to any Social Saturday event! To volunteer\, please email Laurence Bisot (chair@nwtn.org.uk) or Katell Sevellec (katell@nwtn.org.uk) ASAP or let us know on the day – but hurry\, there’s only one ticket up for grabs!  \n\n\n\nPlease note that the venue for this event has changed. It is now at YHA Manchester.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook your place

SUMMARY:Pricing Clinic with Susie Jackson
DESCRIPTION:Susie Jackson – Pricing Mentor\n\n\n\nHow confident are you when putting a price on your services? Do you sometimes struggle to accurately quote for the work you are asked to complete? Do you dread having to raise your rates for fear you may lose clients? \n\n\n\nFor our first CPD event after the summer break\, whether you’re new to the profession or have been in it for some time\, the NWTN wants to make sure you do not undersell your time and efforts. To do so\, we have called upon the expertise of freelancer extraordinaire\, Susie Jackson\, who spoke on this matter during this year’s ITI conference. \n\n\n\nSusie is a finance and pricing mentor to freelancers\, helping them to figure out how much they should be charging and how to manage the financial side of their business so they can earn a decent living doing what they love. She also works freelance as a copy editor and Spanish-to-English translator specialising in academic texts within the field of Social Sciences. \n\n\n\nJoining our zoom-based event from Mexico\, she will answer attendees’ questions on pricing for services\, tailoring her advice to your specific situations. We will give priority to questions submitted in advance\, so please tell us about the issue you need help with when buying your ticket on Eventbrite. Once all previously submitted questions have been answered\, and if we have any time left\, we will open the floor to more questions from the audience. \n\n\n\nThe clinic will take place online via Zoom on 4th September at 3-5pm. The specific joining instructions will be provided upon purchase of your Eventbrite ticket\, including instructions regarding how to submit your question(s). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are delighted to start the 2021-2022 CPD programme with such a valuable session\, which promises to be particularly useful for all NWTN members.

SUMMARY:Creative Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we play host to author and songwriter\, Dr. Elaine Walker\, on Zoom for a morning of creative writing. \n\n\n\nIt can be said that every translator brings something personal to a target text. In turn\, all writers are translators. Creative writing is above all a translational process. Translation therefore plays a significant role for creative writers who work with foreign language texts. When honing our skills\, it is worth remembering the importance that may be placed on the (in)visibility of the translator\, and the concomitant fluency and readability of the translation\, linked to the perceived reader’s expectations. Creative writing exercises are a useful tool to develop and hone a translator’s style. \n\n\n\nSuitable for both beginners and more experienced writers\, we’ll be exploring our own names and the stories that surround them as a starting point and then following where that leads. \n\n\n\nTickets are priced at £10 and are available via the Eventbrite link given below. Places are limited to a maximum of 10 participants so you will need to be quick! \n\n\n\nYou can learn more about Elaine’s writing via her Facebook page: \n\n\n\n\n\nLink

SUMMARY:Book Chat\, Chapter 4 – A Sense of Place
DESCRIPTION:Escape with a good book…    \n\n\n\nThose cold winter evenings are now upon us… so it’s the perfect opportunity to snuggle up in our favourite cosy chair by the fire and escape with a good book! \n\n\n\nSo\, as the main topic of discussion for our next NWTN Bookchat session\, we’ve chosen books that have the power to whisk us away to other places\, and even other worlds. \n\n\n\n– What have you read that has taken you back to a place you have visited in the past? What effect did it have on you? \n\n\n\n– Have you ever read anything that has really made you want to visit a place? Why? Did you ever visit it? \n\n\n\n– What have you read that has transported you to another world? \n\n\n\n– For you\, which particular authors really conjure up a sense of place in their works? \n\n\n\nWe will then have the opportunity to hear NWTN Treasurer\, Andrew Wilson\, talking about his ‘Desert Island Reads’. We need others of you to tell us about your Desert Island Reads in future sessions – so get thinking!! \n\n\n\nAs usual\, the session will end with an opportunity to exchange reading recommendations. These may prove very useful with Christmas on the horizon! \n\n\n\nTo kick off the discussion prior to the event\, and to keep it going with your recommendations and thoughts afterwards\, please use the NWTN Forum in the area dedicated to the Book Chat. Sign into your NWTN account and join in here! \n\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you on the 24th\, \n\n\n\nJanice and Laurence \n\n\n\nClick the link below to join the chat and enter ‘981038’ when prompted.

SUMMARY:Take Note! An online note-taking workshop for interpreters
DESCRIPTION:A CPD session aimed at practising interpreters who are keen to improve their note-taking skills for long and short consecutive assignments. \n\n\n\nThe first part will briefly revisit the principles of note-taking commonly taught on initial interpreter training programmes\, allowing space for discussion and reflection on how well these principles have served participants’ practice to date. Structured exercises in long consecutive will help participants to identify particular problem areas and experiment with alternative approaches. The first part of the session will end with a focus on note reading for enhanced performance. \n\n\n\nIn the second part of the session\, we will focus on short consecutive for assignments in public services. We will briefly revisit the features of interaction that can make note-taking a challenge and reflect on the ways in which long consecutive techniques can be adapted to the short form. This part of the session will be supported by materials reflecting authentic interactions in the healthcare and legal settings. The session will end with suggestions for resources to support independent and collaborative practice. \n\n\n\nThe session will: \n\n\n\nbriefly revisit core principles of note-taking;provide a structured approach for identifying problem areas and their triggers;allow space to experiment with language directionality in notes and symbol formation;encourage reflection on the relationship between note-taking and memory;include a focus on note reading for enhanced performance;suggest resources for independent / collaborative practice.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday 25 July\, 10 a.m. – 12.30 p.m. (to include a short break between sessions) \n\n\n\nWhere: Online via Zoom. Details of the Zoom meeting will be made visible to ticket holders. \n\n\n\nLanguages: Any \n\n\n\nWhat do I need?: A good internet connection\, a microphone (camera is desirable but not necessary)\, paper and pens. \n\n\n\nAbout the session facilitator \n\n\n\nThe session will be hosted by Rebecca Tipton PhD DPSI FHEA. Rebecca is a Lecturer in Interpreting and Translation Studies at the University of Manchester where she teaches the Theory and Practice of Translation and Interpreting at undergraduate and postgraduate levels\, and researches aspects of public service interpreting in contemporary society and in the mid-late twentieth century. \n\n\n\nShe is particularly interested in the application of reflective practice to interpreter education to foster independent learning and the critical thinking skills that support the transition of interpreting trainees into professional practice. She is the co-author (with Olgierda Furmanek\, Wake Forest University) of Dialogue Interpreting: A guide to interpreting in public services and the community\, published by Routledge in 2016. She is currently developing a book on teaching ethics on translation and interpreting programmes. \n\n\n\nWe are delighted to welcome Rebecca as a speaker and look forward to seeing many of our interpreter colleagues for what promises to be a highly informative and beneficial event.
