SUMMARY:Knitting & Crafts Social Saturday
DESCRIPTION:Over the last decade or so\, we have all at some point or another\, had occasion to question and assess the sustainability of the way we consume\, work and generally live our lives. In the drive towards sustainability\, we have been encouraged to recycle\, upcycle\, repair\, do-it-ourselves\, and generally make do and mend rather than buying new. As a result\, knitting\, sewing and other crafts have grown in popularity\, right across the globe. And if it’s global\, it’s multilingual – and that’s where we come in.  \n\n\n\nLike all our Social Saturday events\, this get-together will primarily aim to provide a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere for all crafters – both experts and novices – to meet up and swap needles and vocabulary tips over a cup of tea.  \n\n\n\n\nAre you an experienced crafter? Please bring your best work and showcase your skills for other members.\n\n\n\nA novice\, but keen to learn? This is a chance for you to pick up a few tricks and try your hand at something new. Some material will be provided but do bring along any project you need help with! \n\n\n\n\nKnitting is a very technical subject and can be challenging in translation\, with many obscure abbreviations and tricky measurements. Anne de Freyman\, who is currently translating the Vogue Knitting book from English to French\, will talk about the specific challenges which the project presents. A keen knitter herself\, she will be joined by other wool crafters and make-your-own enthusiasts.  \n\n\n\nWhether you are creative or not\, are keen to learn about crafts\, or just want to know more about the translation of knitting patterns and other related texts\, please join us for a convivial afternoon at the YHA in Manchester.  \n\n\n\nAs usual\, tickets to our Social Saturdays are £5 (+ Eventbrite fees)\, please book your place on Eventbrite \n\n\n\nDon’t forget that you can volunteer (either prior to or during the event) to write a review for it. Your write-up will be published on our blog\, and you will get a FREE TICKET to any Social Saturday event! To volunteer\, please email Laurence Bisot (chair@nwtn.org.uk) or Katell Sevellec (katell@nwtn.org.uk) ASAP or let us know on the day – but hurry\, there’s only one ticket up for grabs!  \n\n\n\nPlease note that the venue for this event has changed. It is now at YHA Manchester.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook your place

SUMMARY:Pricing Clinic with Susie Jackson
DESCRIPTION:Susie Jackson – Pricing Mentor\n\n\n\nHow confident are you when putting a price on your services? Do you sometimes struggle to accurately quote for the work you are asked to complete? Do you dread having to raise your rates for fear you may lose clients? \n\n\n\nFor our first CPD event after the summer break\, whether you’re new to the profession or have been in it for some time\, the NWTN wants to make sure you do not undersell your time and efforts. To do so\, we have called upon the expertise of freelancer extraordinaire\, Susie Jackson\, who spoke on this matter during this year’s ITI conference. \n\n\n\nSusie is a finance and pricing mentor to freelancers\, helping them to figure out how much they should be charging and how to manage the financial side of their business so they can earn a decent living doing what they love. She also works freelance as a copy editor and Spanish-to-English translator specialising in academic texts within the field of Social Sciences. \n\n\n\nJoining our zoom-based event from Mexico\, she will answer attendees’ questions on pricing for services\, tailoring her advice to your specific situations. We will give priority to questions submitted in advance\, so please tell us about the issue you need help with when buying your ticket on Eventbrite. Once all previously submitted questions have been answered\, and if we have any time left\, we will open the floor to more questions from the audience. \n\n\n\nThe clinic will take place online via Zoom on 4th September at 3-5pm. The specific joining instructions will be provided upon purchase of your Eventbrite ticket\, including instructions regarding how to submit your question(s). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are delighted to start the 2021-2022 CPD programme with such a valuable session\, which promises to be particularly useful for all NWTN members.

SUMMARY:Creative Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we play host to author and songwriter\, Dr. Elaine Walker\, on Zoom for a morning of creative writing. \n\n\n\nIt can be said that every translator brings something personal to a target text. In turn\, all writers are translators. Creative writing is above all a translational process. Translation therefore plays a significant role for creative writers who work with foreign language texts. When honing our skills\, it is worth remembering the importance that may be placed on the (in)visibility of the translator\, and the concomitant fluency and readability of the translation\, linked to the perceived reader’s expectations. Creative writing exercises are a useful tool to develop and hone a translator’s style. \n\n\n\nSuitable for both beginners and more experienced writers\, we’ll be exploring our own names and the stories that surround them as a starting point and then following where that leads. \n\n\n\nTickets are priced at £10 and are available via the Eventbrite link given below. Places are limited to a maximum of 10 participants so you will need to be quick! \n\n\n\nYou can learn more about Elaine’s writing via her Facebook page: \n\n\n\n\n\nLink

SUMMARY:Book Chat\, Chapter 4 – A Sense of Place
DESCRIPTION:Escape with a good book…    \n\n\n\nThose cold winter evenings are now upon us… so it’s the perfect opportunity to snuggle up in our favourite cosy chair by the fire and escape with a good book! \n\n\n\nSo\, as the main topic of discussion for our next NWTN Bookchat session\, we’ve chosen books that have the power to whisk us away to other places\, and even other worlds. \n\n\n\n– What have you read that has taken you back to a place you have visited in the past? What effect did it have on you? \n\n\n\n– Have you ever read anything that has really made you want to visit a place? Why? Did you ever visit it? \n\n\n\n– What have you read that has transported you to another world? \n\n\n\n– For you\, which particular authors really conjure up a sense of place in their works? \n\n\n\nWe will then have the opportunity to hear NWTN Treasurer\, Andrew Wilson\, talking about his ‘Desert Island Reads’. We need others of you to tell us about your Desert Island Reads in future sessions – so get thinking!! \n\n\n\nAs usual\, the session will end with an opportunity to exchange reading recommendations. These may prove very useful with Christmas on the horizon! \n\n\n\nTo kick off the discussion prior to the event\, and to keep it going with your recommendations and thoughts afterwards\, please use the NWTN Forum in the area dedicated to the Book Chat. Sign into your NWTN account and join in here! \n\n\n\nWe look forward to seeing you on the 24th\, \n\n\n\nJanice and Laurence \n\n\n\nClick the link below to join the chat and enter ‘981038’ when prompted.

SUMMARY:Take Note! An online note-taking workshop for interpreters
DESCRIPTION:A CPD session aimed at practising interpreters who are keen to improve their note-taking skills for long and short consecutive assignments. \n\n\n\nThe first part will briefly revisit the principles of note-taking commonly taught on initial interpreter training programmes\, allowing space for discussion and reflection on how well these principles have served participants’ practice to date. Structured exercises in long consecutive will help participants to identify particular problem areas and experiment with alternative approaches. The first part of the session will end with a focus on note reading for enhanced performance. \n\n\n\nIn the second part of the session\, we will focus on short consecutive for assignments in public services. We will briefly revisit the features of interaction that can make note-taking a challenge and reflect on the ways in which long consecutive techniques can be adapted to the short form. This part of the session will be supported by materials reflecting authentic interactions in the healthcare and legal settings. The session will end with suggestions for resources to support independent and collaborative practice. \n\n\n\nThe session will: \n\n\n\nbriefly revisit core principles of note-taking;provide a structured approach for identifying problem areas and their triggers;allow space to experiment with language directionality in notes and symbol formation;encourage reflection on the relationship between note-taking and memory;include a focus on note reading for enhanced performance;suggest resources for independent / collaborative practice.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhen: Saturday 25 July\, 10 a.m. – 12.30 p.m. (to include a short break between sessions) \n\n\n\nWhere: Online via Zoom. Details of the Zoom meeting will be made visible to ticket holders. \n\n\n\nLanguages: Any \n\n\n\nWhat do I need?: A good internet connection\, a microphone (camera is desirable but not necessary)\, paper and pens. \n\n\n\nAbout the session facilitator \n\n\n\nThe session will be hosted by Rebecca Tipton PhD DPSI FHEA. Rebecca is a Lecturer in Interpreting and Translation Studies at the University of Manchester where she teaches the Theory and Practice of Translation and Interpreting at undergraduate and postgraduate levels\, and researches aspects of public service interpreting in contemporary society and in the mid-late twentieth century. \n\n\n\nShe is particularly interested in the application of reflective practice to interpreter education to foster independent learning and the critical thinking skills that support the transition of interpreting trainees into professional practice. She is the co-author (with Olgierda Furmanek\, Wake Forest University) of Dialogue Interpreting: A guide to interpreting in public services and the community\, published by Routledge in 2016. She is currently developing a book on teaching ethics on translation and interpreting programmes. \n\n\n\nWe are delighted to welcome Rebecca as a speaker and look forward to seeing many of our interpreter colleagues for what promises to be a highly informative and beneficial event.

SUMMARY:'Battle of the Kingdoms' Quiz Slam
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a pub quiz in the comfort of your own home! We’re going bigger with our sixth quiz! NWTN members will compete against Yorkshire and NERG ITI members! HINT: brush up on your knowledge of Greater Manchester\, Yorkshire and the North East! \n\n\n\nHere’s how it will work:\n\n\n\nThe quiz is just for fun\, you will mark your own answers.Teams can comprise 1-4 people max. depending on who is in your household. Please do not cheat and ask Google! This is to exercise your brainpower.Your microphone should be muted for the entire quiz\, to avoid distracting the host and other players. If you need a question to be repeated or have technical issues\, please ask via the chat box and the host will try to help ASAP.We’re asking attendees to change their display name on Zoom to include which group they’re a member of and their language pairs so we can get to know each other a little bit! For example\, ‘Jane Doe\, NWTN\, FR <> EN interpreter’. If you’re not sure how to do this\, just ask in the chat when you join the call and we’ll help you. It is a chance for us to ‘meet up’ and see each other’s faces during what is a time of worry for us all\, so we want attendees to feel relaxed and not ‘on show’ to the wider world!Make sure you have a pen and paper handy. The host will repeat the questions at the end of each round. There will be several rounds of questions. Each question will be worth one (1) point only\, apart from the music round. Each NWTN member household will add up their score\, likewise for the YTI and NERG members. The total scores from each regional group will be added together and the average score calculated. The winners will be the regional team who has scored the highest average score! The prize is…to be revealed!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHere’s how to join\n\n\n\nTo join via Zoom\, click on the link below (or enter Meeting ID: 880 422 124) and enter the following password when prompted: 794597 \n\n\n\nIf you wish to send any feedback\, please email events@nwtn.org.uk at the end of the quiz. \n\n\n\nGood luck!
