SUMMARY:Summer Walk 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a leisurely six-mile stroll through the beautiful Tame Valley to the north-east of Manchester. \n\n\n\nThe walk starts in Mossley /ˈmɒzli/\, meaning ‘a woodland clearing by a swamp or bog’\, but you’ll be pleased to hear that our walk will not be taking us through any marshy land! Instead\, we’ll be following the tree-lined Micklehurst Loop – an old railway line that used to act as a relief route carrying goods from Stalybridge to Diggle – before joining the Huddersfield canal and following it through to the quaint town of Uppermill. En route\, we’ll be passing several locks and there will no doubt be plenty of opportunities for nature lovers to spot some fabulous flora and fauna. \n\n\n\nMICKLEHURST LOOP\n\n\n\nWeather allowing\, we’ll picnic in the park before heading back along the canal to our starting point\, so a sit-mat might be a good idea. Numerous watering holes along route will provide shelter and refreshment in the event of summer showers. We will also be passing the Greenfield Tesco in case anyone needs to use the public conveniences or stock up on snacks. Upon our return\, there is a lovely little pub on the hillside above the railway station for anyone wishing to sample the local Millstone ale. \n\n\n\nWaterproof walking boots may be recommendable if the weather has been up to its usual tricks the week before as the tow path can get quite muddy. The route is reasonably flat but can get quite narrow in places (particularly under bridges)\, so any dogs or young children that might be joining us will need to be kept on a short leash to avoid having to dive into the canal after them. \n\n\n\nHow to get there \n\n\n\nPublic transport: unfortunately\, TPE have decided that replacement buses are the way to go that weekend. But\, don’t worry\, you can get the train to Stalybridge from Manchester Piccadilly (just under 15 minutes) and then a rail replacement bus to Mossley. There’s also the 356 bus which stops by Stalybridge train station and will take you all the way to Uppermill if you’re joining us a bit later. It takes about 25 minutes and costs £2. This is also an option if you don’t fancy walking all the way back. When you arrive at the station in Mossley\, it’s about a five-minute walk to our starting point. Cross the two pedestrian crossings and head down Mill Street – quite a steep one-way street. At the bottom of Mill Street\, head straight on until you come to the crossroads just after the New Bridge Inn. Turn left at the crossroads onto Station Road and our starting point is about 100 m further on. \n\n\n\nBy car: there is plenty of free roadside parking near our starting point on Station Road\, postcode OL5 9HU https://maps.app.goo.gl/FkTNbBdeg7gDqHQn8 \n\n\n\nContacts on the day:Kirsty Olivant: 07708 028 159

Please click the RSVP link at the end of this message to confirm you plan to attend\, so we can order the right amount of tea\, coffee and biscuits. \n\n\n\nIt will be a mixture of discussion groups\, socialising and a ‘listening visit’ from ITI Board member Dean Evans\, as part of the Institute’s Board on Tour initiative\, seeking to engage more closely with its members. Non-ITI members are very welcome to participate in this session\, and who knows\, you may even decide you’d like to join ITI\, though there will be no pressure to do so. \n\n\n\nThe venue is once again the Friends’ Meeting House\, 6 Mount Street\, Manchester\, M2 5NS\, just behind the Central Library and a minute’s walk from St Peter’s Square Metrolink stop. \n\n\n\nThe anticipated timetable for the day will be: \n\n\n\n10am-10.30am              introductory socialising over tea\, coffee & biscuits \n\n\n\n10.30-12 noon                group discussions of: \n\n\n\n– the value and benefits of professional associations \n\n\n\n– the challenges now facing the translation and interpreting professions \n\n\n\n12 noon-1.30pm            Lunch is not provided\, and the venue does not allow us to bring our own food. However\, there are plenty of cafes and food outlets nearby\, and this is a good opportunity to network in small groups! \n\n\n\n1.30pm-3.30pm             listening session led by ITI Board member Dean Evans\, as part of \n\n\n\nITI’s Board on Tour initiative\, aiming to engage more closely with its members. \n\n\n\n3.30pm                              tea & coffee \n\n\n\n4pm-4.30pm                  final round-up/Q&A session \n\n\n\nWe aim to finish by 4.30pm\, at which point you’ll be welcome to join us for drinks in a nearby bar\, where we plan to celebrate the recent wedding of one of our longstanding members. If you don’t know who that person is\, you need to join our WhatsApp group! We look forward to networking and socialising with our members!
