SUMMARY:NWTN Annual Dinner 2024
DESCRIPTION:Spring is coming\, and it’s time to meet again for a convivial dinner with colleagues. This year\, we’re returning to Browns Brasserie in Manchester City Centre\, with a delicious three-course menu to tempt your tastebuds. The NWTN will pay for your first drink to lighten the atmosphere and get everyone chatting. \n\n\n\nYour partner is welcome to join us too! As a note to any newbie members\, or those who don’t know many others\, you need not feel shy – we’ll make sure you feel welcome as that’s the point of being part of a friendly local network! \n\n\n\nBrowns offers a wonderful three-course menu called the Classic at £30.50. The menu is available to read or download below. When you buy your ticket(s)\, you’ll need to pre-order your chosen dishes from the menu. The hardest part will be remembering what you pre-ordered on the day! \n\n\n\nThe NWTN will pay the group service charge\, so you’ll only have to pay for any extra drinks – we kindly ask you to order them and ‘pay as you go’ at the bar\, to save us any headaches of dealing with a large bill at the end! \n\n\n\nThe restaurant is situated at the top of King Street\, so it’s not far from the Alliance française (Portland Street) where we’ll hold our AGM on the same day\, from 4pm to 6pm. We’re looking forward to seeing you at both events! \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions\, please contact Laurence at chair@nwtn.org.uk. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClassic-menu-24Download

SUMMARY:Spring Walk - a Joint NWTN/YTI Adventure
DESCRIPTION:Another opportunity to socialise with your colleagues from the other side of the Pennines\, on a joint walk on ‘neutral territory’ in the Derbyshire Peak District. The Hope Valley is only around 10 miles from Sheffield but its rocky skylines and wooded valleys are among the Peak District’s most scenic landscapes. Like last time\, there will be a harder and an easier walk – see below for details. Each walk will stop for a packed lunch en route\, and there is a cafe at the beginning and end. The one at the meeting point is of the ‘greasy spoon’ variety (no alternative but at least it has plenty of space). The one at the end\, where both groups will meet up again\, is more upmarket and we’ll have our own reserved area.Toilet facilities are limited to the start and end of the harder walk but the easier walk has a cafe/toilet stop en route. \n\n\n\n High-level walk\n\n\n\nOrganisers Chris Thompson (YTI) and Mike Hanson (NWTN) \n\n\n\nStart 11.30 from Grindleford railway station\, following a pit stop in the Station Cafe. See below for train times and other transport information. \n\n\n\nEnd Hathersage mid-afternoon\, for tea and cakes at Cintra’s Tea Room on the main road. \n\n\n\nHow to get there We strongly recommend using the train\, not just for sustainability reasons but also because parking at the start is very limited. And because this is a linear walk from Grindleford to Hathersage\, you’ll need to catch a train back to the start anyway. \n\n\n\nTrain Grindleford is on the line from Manchester to Sheffield. There is an hourly stopping train service run by Northern (don’t get on a TPE fast train\, as you’ll go straight to the other city). From the Yorkshire side\, buy a return ticket to Hathersage (cost from Sheffield approx. £6.00) and catch the 10.14 from Sheffield (arr. Grindleford 10.28). From the Manchester side\, buy a return ticket to Grindleford (cost from Manchester approx. £10.00) and catch the 9.48 from Manchester Piccadilly (arr. Grindleford 10.48). \n\n\n\nThe trains back from Hathersage towards Manchester run at 32 minutes past the hour and towards Grindleford and Sheffield at 44 minutes past the hour. \n\n\n\nCar There is limited parking at Grindleford station (post code S32 2JA\, £2 all day – RingGo app or phone only\, no cash) but if this is full\, there are few alternatives. One option is to park at Hathersage (limited free parking at the station or £6/day in the town’s main car park\, where there is more space) and to catch the 10.44 train from Hathersage to Grindleford – buy your train ticket from the machine at Hathersage station entrance or online. \n\n\n\nGrindleford is only 40 miles from Manchester but it’s a slow journey along rural Peak District roads (AA route planner suggests 1½ hours). Sheffield is much closer (10 miles) but you’ll still have the potential parking problems. \n\n\n\nTHE WALKS \n\n\n\n\nHarder/high-level walk About 6 miles\, but strenuous in places with some steep uphill sections. Length 3-4 hours including breaks. Some agility required as there are steep and potentially slippery sections as well as stiles. \n\n\n\nMagnificent views from the higher sections. Walking boots are required\, as the going is rough in places and likely to be muddy. No trainers. If the weather is foul on the day\, we won’t do this route. \n\n\n\n\n\nEasier/low-level walk Around 4½ miles\, mostly flat but potentially muddy (white trainers not recommended!). Walking through woodlands and fields\, we follow the river Derwent\, with the possibility of seeing birdlife including dippers\, plus a stopover at the cutlery workshop and its cafe. At the end of the walk\, you can either head straight for the cafe or walk up to see Little John’s grave\, and enjoy some more fine views. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n Both levels\n\n\n\n\n\nFood and drink Bring a packed lunch + water to drink\, also a mat to sit on when eating/resting. See introduction for details of cafes at the beginning and end of the walk. \n\n\n\nBooking Please book via Eventbrite (click on the button below) and indicate your preference for the harder or easier route. You can change your mind on the day. Equal numbers of places will be assigned to NWTN and YTI members\, and a waiting list will be set up if the walks are oversubscribed. \n\n\n\nPartners welcome on this social event\, as are dogs and children (provided their parents are happy they can manage the distances/gradients involved – more information available from organisers on request). \n\n\n\n\n\n Low-level walk\n\n\n\n\n\nIMPORTANT – PLEASE READ AND ONLY COME ON THE WALK IF YOU ACCEPT THE FOLLOWING WARNING: \n\n\n\nEveryone is welcome but participants must consider themselves to be on a private excursion – neither the organisers nor NWTN or YTI or ITI can accept any liability for accidents or injuries sustained by anyone involved. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIF THERE IS A RAIL STRIKE ON SATURDAY 20 APRIL\, THIS WALK WILL HAVE TO BE POSTPONED \n\n\n\nas it is dependent on the hourly train service between Manchester and Sheffield. The unions have to give 2 weeks’ notice of strike action\, so we will know by the weekend of 5/6 April whether our walk date of 20 April is safe. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nBook here
