So many German authors, even of gritty thrillers and Krimis, feel the need to prove themselves as intellectual authors by wandering off into abstract reflection. Works great in German, but it doesn&#8217;t travel well!</p>

<p>One of my favourite series is by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Claude_Izzo" rel="nofollow ugc">Jean-Claude Izzo</a>, known as &#8220;The Marseilles trilogy&#8221;.  They feature a police detective called Fabio Montale, who is a bit of a misfit due to his social conscience.
